Simple, Elegant, User-Centered Design

I like attractive, functional websites. I believe in web standards and that the hallmark of good design is that you don’t notice it.

I started as a professional web designer in 2001. In 2007-2008 I took a year off to teach college art courses as part of my MFA degree. I’ve worked on a range of projects including in-house development at startups, working as an independent contractor, and enterprise scale projects serving 50,000+ users at Virginia Tech.

Current

I completed my Master of Fine Arts degree in December 2008. I currently work as a freelance web designer.

April 2009- August 2009

  • I worked at OIRED at Virginia Tech as a web designer.

August 2007- December 2008

  • Art 111 – I put together a no frills website for the Art 111 class I taught for 2 semesters as part of my Master of Fine Arts degree at Radford University.
  • Radford University Graduate Student Council- I built and managed the website for a year as a volunteer service position. My successor in that position has since destroyed the website by trying to edit it with Microsoft Word.

January 2005- August 2007

  • MyVT I managed the user interface layer of Virginia Tech’s Web Portal.
  • VT Search I redesigned VT Search to fit the new look and feel of Virginia Tech’s rebranded web presence.
  • COSMOS – an open source project at Virginia Tech
  • Public Veterinary Practice Club (site has been taken down)
  • CNS at Virginia Tech This is an ongoing project to migrate the site into a standards compliant format.
  • COLA (Customer OnLine Access) I worked on user interface design for this site. Standards compliant, CSS based layouts which match legacy table based layouts are used for new applications.
  • UVA Alumni Club of the Roanoke Valley I designed the website, manage online and email publicity, and design publicity materials for the club.

June 2004 – January 2005

  • top.bev.net
  • www.bev.net The ongoing task is to update this site without destroying its original color scheme or ‘look and feel.’
  • Rappahannock Tribe
  • Agape CCCC- Civic group on Virginia’s Eastern Shore (site has been taken down)
  • VMRCVM School Class of 2008 (site has been taken down)

2003- June 2004

  • Stars Beads
  • SALT for all Seasons- Website design and business logic for a cottage business selling seasoned salt.
  • NanoTEL- Redesigned by another company
  • Pie Gourmet-This site has been redesigned by another company, though much of the business logic I wrote remains the same. This site was built around the same PHP and MySQL shopping cart I wrote for Star’s Clasps.
  • Star’s Clasps An ongoing project.
  • NCBW Links- Website for a non-profit organization, now offline
  • Green Card Apply Center- now out of business
  • Suburban Credit Corp- undergoing redesign by a different company
  • CEM- USA- Currently offline. This site was a real challenge, because I needed to learn the Korean alphabet in order to put it together. Quality of the site has declined because the end user has made image edits.
  • Spaytech Kids- Contributed PHP scripts to control access to a webcam used by parents to watch their kids in day care.
  • The Moving Castle First a personal website, and then a web design company. Now a personal website again.

2001-2002

  • Stickdog Site has been significantly scaled down.
  • Brambled Nest- One of the first sites I did, with nested tables. Site has been redesigned by another company.
  • Capitol Concierge I inherited a Dreamweaver template site without the templates and did the template over with PHP.

1998-2000

Personal site hosted on UVA subdomain space, followed by a personal site hosted on my iMac.
